Mix Bar 02/09 - Thy neighbour's ox

colles's picture

Back to school . . . . teachers back to work. But it's still bloody hot.

Today we spoke a lot about the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints . . . . known as the Mormons. Trying to work out whether they are polygamists or not . . . apparently not, or not anymore anyway . . . . polygamy was discontinued about a hundred years ago. However, it seems that their nineteenth century founder, Joseph Smith, claimed to be a prophet of God and used his influence  . . . at God's command . . . . to take several wives. Source   Like many religions they believe that all the other ones are wrong. Smith found another book, called the Book of Mormon, which doesn't have as many mistakes as the Bible . . . . which makes it truer. It also documents Jesus' visit to America.

Then we chatted about the ten commandments (word of interest - the verb to covet). Apparently there is a fundamentalist branch of the Mormon church that has one that no other Christian religion has. It is "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself". . . . . . . . . Well that's got to be the best one, it's certainly better than "Thy shalt not covet thy neighbour's ox". Even if my neighbour had an ox, I doubt I would covet it very much.

Next week we start the first installment of "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde
